WE WERE

STRANGERS .... We three, sat in a row. An American, an Israeli Arab, a Russian Jew that just made aliyah.

Arab had a book of literature opened in his lap and classical music playing.. nervous as we took off.

Russian Jew ... looked as if he were only a boy... twirled a pen between his fingers as he peered out the window watching the ground move below the wheels...

I watched them.... and listened to the familiar and comforting hum of the engine.

An Arab with a book ... interestingly I've never seen an Arab with a book before.. odd, but true.

The Russian Jew leaned forward and introduced himself across the reading man.... Hello, I am Doctor ........... I am on my way home.. well, where I used to live to see family. I made aliyah and am new to Israel.

I smiled...

The Arab reader took off the headset and introduced himself....

Scratched his head and looked at us as we continued to have conversation across his space.

After twenty minutes I knew that the Arab reader is a published author and poet ... and a high level researcher for a political institution. Intelligent and nervous. A young man that works with many in the field of wisdom... let's not call them aged!

My hair falls into my eyes and he, the nervous Arab reader reached over and brushed it away. Like he knew me in the moment instead of being someone vaguely familiar.

He excused himself and turned away shyly... then he smiled and said "we can get married in (city) !" "I have a long layover of 12 hours" and I replied I have 10. He said "Good enough" .. He looked at the Doctor and said can you join us?? Alas his layover was just a few moments..

.

We exit the plane and head to catch the bus ...

In a strange town ... we meander in the night .. to find a place that was magical ... and lovely ... drinks and dinner and a hike up a mountain .. to sit and talk of philosophy like Paul did so long ago ..

We returned to the airport hours later .. he hugged me and said.. "it seems like we've lived a full life in a moment of time....

I looked up at his young face and said .. so tell me about your book .. and he said it's about humanity and living a full life and choosing JOY .........

I said "Powerful" ..... and "HERE is to YOUR SISTER and HER daughters she left behind and may they PASS on the JOY". I kissed him on the cheek and wiped the single tear away.

YOU see, this man's sister just died two weeks earlier and now he is the keeper of two young nieces .. and in his sadness he's seeking his joy again to pour into them...

YOUNG .. 30 something ... old, nervous soul ...

Fortunate to meet him ...
fortunate to share a meal, a walk, dreams, hope and politics ...

life a wonderful mystery ...
